Cuomo/Tappan Zee Bridge Leaping Sturgeon

Commissioned by Arts Westchester and the NY Thruway Authority, along with artwork by eight other artists, for the pedestrian and bike walkway of the new Cuomo Bridge (KA Tappan Zee Bridge). A 14 foot long sturgeon of salvaged steel leaps into the air at an overlook of the Cuomo Bridge. Stainless steel rods jutting up from the bulkhead support the twisting form in space. The backdrop for the sculpture is sky, river, and in the distance the new bridge itself. In days past sturgeon surged up the river in the hundreds of thousands, overfishing, the demand for caviar, and development led to their drastic decline. This sculpture literally elevates the sturgeon, raising public awareness; environmental stewardship of the Hudson gradually will help sturgeon and other native wildlife resurge.
