Small Wax and Resin Sculptures

In the course of casting small sculptures in bronze I became intrigued by the wax stage of the lost wax process. Over the years I’ve made many sculptures in wax, incorporating color and investigating the painterly qualities of the material. By adding paint to melted batches of white microcrystalline wax and pouring them out on plaster slabs I create sheets of different colors, which I can then model like clay. They were beautiful in wax, but if I didn’t cast into bronze they eventually crumpled. For the piece’s longevity, I eventually learned to build the sculptures over light wood or wire armatures and build the sculptures over. Some are then coated with a polyurethane to protect the surface.
